How to photograph a broken part for replacement

Good photos do not replace measurements, but they dramatically improve identification and engineering triage. The goal is to show the whole part, how it interfaces with the product, and the details that distinguish it from similar components.

Start with three orthogonal views

Photograph the front, back, and side with the full part in frame. Keep the camera square to the part where possible instead of using only dramatic angles.

Show the failure clearly

Add a close-up of the crack, missing tab, worn surface, stripped feature, deformation, or other damage. If a piece broke off, photograph both pieces together and separately.

Capture mounting and interfaces

Photograph screw holes, clips, shafts, mating surfaces, rails, hinges, electrical connectors, and neighboring components. These often matter more than the exterior shape.

Include labels and molded markings

Part numbers, manufacturer names, mold markings, arrows, cavity numbers, and product labels can transform an uncertain identification into a strong match.

Use a scale reference when useful

A ruler or caliper in a separate photo can provide context, but do not assume perspective photos are precise measurements. We treat estimated dimensions differently from verified measurements.

Avoid hiding detail with glare or clutter

Use even lighting, a simple background, and enough resolution to see edges and small features. More useful evidence is better than more nearly identical photos.
